Passion is the Fashion - and It Sells

Do you get fired up when you hear the phrase, “Print is dead?” Do you smile when you think about that video the crazy dude from Canada made a few years back, shouting it from the rooftops, “I LOVE printing?” (Man, I wish I had made that video!) Are you in love (or at least infatuated) with what you do for a living?

Here is why I ask. Passion informs people. It gets them excited. And when they hear and see passion, it moves them to act. So if you are passionate about what you do, and use it to tell stories about how you help people, how you solve problems and get companies to their goals and beyond, you will be seen as more attractive. And you will attract clients, which attract money...which everyone KNOWS buys happiness.

So, basically, passion = happiness. How do you like my math?

Sally Hogshead is a hall of fame speaker, international author, and the world’s leading expert on fascination. She has a very popular theory about fascination, the primary focus of which is the “Seven Triggers to Fascination.” You take a test and it tells you which of seven attributes you are led by.

People who are led by a passion trigger are expressive, intuitive, dynamic, warm and devoted. Who wouldn’t want to have someone use these adjectives to describe them? I know I would, because my primary trigger is rebellion, which is a whole ’nother blog post.

Hogshead says that in order to fascinate people, those with the passion trigger should apply their natural optimism and energy to instantly build relationships. That sounds pretty good, no?

So back to passion. Your tone of voice, the way you carry your body, HOW you talk to people and what you say to them can all convey your passion for what you do. They can also express the exact opposite. This is why it is SO important to rock your mojo when you are making sales calls and initial presentations.

Sorry to break out a bad cliché, but you never get a second chance to make a first impression, so if you sound like a wet blanket on the phone, and conjure up visions of Eyeore when people meet you, you are going to have just THAT much more of a hard time landing new accounts.

If you are lacking the passion right now, stop what you are doing and go find it again. Remind yourself that you need it to be successful. Fall in love with print again. Today, there are so many tools out there to help you do that. There are Facebook pages, Pinterest boards, and blogs full of reasons to love print and get back into that place where you first fell in love.
