Valassis to Install Gapless Goss Sunday Web Press System

July 2007
LIVONIA, MI—July 20th, 2007—Valassis (NYSE: VCI) announced today that it will install a new Goss Sunday 2000 web press at its Anderson Printing Division (APD) in September 2007. The 24-page gapless press will print up to 77,600 impressions per hour and will be used primarily to produce versioned runs for the company’s shared mail products.

“We need a high-productivity press that is also agile enough to excel in a makeready intensive environment,” said Aaron Trager, senior vice president, APD. “The Sunday 2000 technology will give us that key combination.”

The new four-unit Sunday press at Valassis will be equipped with a Goss Contiweb CS splicer, an Ecocool dryer with integrated chill rolls and a PFF-3 pinless folder. Goss International will also supply semi-automatic Quick Plate Loading technology and Omnicon controls. Valassis employees will attend operator, mechanical and electrical training programs at the Goss International Training Center in New Hampshire.

A 2x6 format will allow the Sunday press at Valassis to produce up to three separate four-page products. Trager says that gapless blanket technology and pinless folding factored into the press selection and that the company will complete one or more makereadies every hour to print versioned products. “Goss International has the technologies and automation features that will make it easier for our operators to run the press and complete job changes efficiently,” Trager said. “Maintaining high quality at high speed with the wide, 2x6 format will give us a productivity advantage, and the gapless, pinless combination will give us the considerable paper savings of a smaller non-print area.”
