Baum Going Strong at 90

SIDNEY, OH—Baumfolder Corp. is marking its 90th anniversary, having begun operations here in 1917. The company started out as a maker of floor-model paper folders, but has diversified into manufacturing and/or distributing a wide range of products, including tabletop folders, paper drills and paper cutters.

Printers Get a Second Look At Lenticular, Courtesy KBA

WILLISTON, VT—KBA North America recently held a second seminar on lenticular printing and prepress work at its headquarters here. This special printing technique gives the impression of 3D, flip or motion effects by printing an image on the back side of lenticular plastic. The four-day seminar featured a presentation by Barry Johnson of Lenstar, an organization devoted to bettering quality and expanding successes within the lenticular industry, and provided information on new markets for lenticular printing.

Participants were also shown how to do a complete job on the KBA Genius 52 UV and Rapida 105 presses.



Adding another facet to its sustainability credentials, Mohawk Fine Papers has converted its fleet of five trucks to run on a biodiesel fuel mix. Using biodiesel substantially reduces the production of unburned hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and particulate matter compared to emissions from petroleum diesel. It also cuts production of sulfur oxides and sulfates by approximately 20 percent.

Four industry execs have been appointed as the newest board of directors members of the M.A. in Graphic Communications Management program at The New York University School of Continuing and Professional Studies. Joining the board are Peter Furlonge, chairman, CGI Group; Lauren Lung, director of professional services, Eastman Kodak’s Graphic Communications Group; Robin Tobin, senior manager of print industry marketing worldwide, Adobe Systems; and Joseph P. Truncale, president and CEO, NAPL. Board members serve on a pro bono basis.

Spiral Binding has acquired the James Burn North America division of James Burn International. Now referred to as James Burn USA, the operation manufactures wire and coil bindings in Poughkeepsie, NY, and Atlanta.

On Demand Machinery has received approval to place the CE mark (officially, CE marking) on its Casemaking System, Sticker, Smasher and Super Sewer products. The designation signifies that the machines meet all the essential manufacturing requirements of the European Economic Area.

Gämmerler Corp. has announced a new management structure to create a closer link between its North American customers and corporate management team. To facilitate this effort, Gunter Gämmerler, CEO, will now reside permanently in the United States and a new customer service assistant, Liz Kleinknecht, has been added in the company’s spare parts department.

John Copeland has been promoted to president of Toyo Ink America, assuming the duties from Fusao Ito, who will continue as director of the company’s board. Copeland joined the ink manufacturer in 2003 as vice president of operations and was previously promoted to executive vice president/COO. Ito will continue to oversee day-to-day operations of the company.

KBA North America has named two new district sales managers. David Oliver will cover the five-state Western region that includes Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Arizona, New Mexico and the city of El Paso, TX. Dan Macke has been promoted to cover the three-state Southeast territory of Florida, Georgia and Alabama, replacing Ed Fitzpatrick who is retiring after 24 successful years.

Michael Mugavero has rejoined MAN Roland as the company’s vice president of sheetfed press sales in the East region, which is a combination of the company’s former Eastern and Southeast regions. In addition, John Graff has been appointed director of sales, packaging and corporate accounts.

To promote the many uses and benefits of print, Kodak has launched a new Website—www.PrintAmbassador.com. It highlights the ability of print to provide targeted, relevant messages and features market research, customer testimonials, return on investment studies, examples of successful print campaigns, a list of related print industry events and a “Find a Printer” section. Visitors can also nominate themselves (or others that advocate for the power of print) for Print Ambassador status.
