BINDERY matters

May 2007
Puritan Press Garners New Vijuk Saddlestitcher

HOLLIS, NH—Puritan Press, which serves academic, corporate and non-profit institutions, recently installed a Vijuk 321-T saddlestitcher, distributed by Vijuk Equipment. The in-line punch on the new machine has been very helpful in fulfilling high-volume book orders that require three-hole punching prior to insertion into binders for one of Puritan’s largest accounts.

Sigler Printing Augments Stitching Line

AMES, IA—Full-service provider Sigler Printing has bolstered its saddlestitching capabilities with the addition of a Muller Martini Presto stitcher.

The acquisition allows Sigler Printing to increase its cost-effectiveness, particularly in the short- to mid-range market. According to Jill Whitaker, vice president of operations, the Presto was installed as an add-on piece of equipment and the company has been impressed with the quick setup for smaller runs.

Founded in 1958, Sigler’s capabilities include printing, finishing, mailing, fulfillment and creative services.

New Stitcher Proves to Be A Pace Setter

LEBANON JUNCTION, KY—Publishers Press recently put the finishing touches on the installation of the world’s first Goss Pacesetter 2200 saddlestitcher. Also planned is the addition of a Goss Universalbinder adhesive binding system.

Joe Sweeney, bindery manager at Publishers Press, notes that high net throughput and simplified operation and makereadies were key factors in selecting the new shaftless stitching technology for short- to medium-run publication applications.

Sweeney says that being able to keep the system running fast in tandem with product personalization will be a major plus passed on to clients.

The Pacesetter system will feature eight horizontal hoppers and be equipped for selective binding and ink-jet personalization. Goss will also supply an FS-22 flying stitcher, HT-22 trimmer, mail table and BS60 stacker. The Universalbinder will be equipped with 30 RG324 hoppers.

Cut and Fold Capabilities Soar At Modern Litho

JEFFERSON CITY, MO—General commercial and publication printer Modern Litho added some heft to its bindery operations with the addition of a Polar 137 XT cutting system and a Stahlfolder TH 82 folder.

Modern Litho President Darrell Moore notes that the cutter has helped to double cutting speed and output per operator, while significantly improving bindery safety. The folder, meanwhile, has bolstered speed and folding capacity by allowing the $11 million printer to perform in-house folds it had previously outsourced to another provider.

Quick Cuts

Evergreen Printing & Publishing, Bellmawr, NJ, recently completed the first phase of an upgrade in its postpress department with the installation of several pieces of equipment, including a polybag machine, a Muller Martini BravoPlus saddlestitcher with automatic makeready system (AMRYS) and an AlphaLiner inserting system.
