New Press Credited with Business Growth

TROY, MI—Tepel Brothers Printing liked its first six-color Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 105 press so much, it purchased another one just six months later. The new press has full interdeck UV capabilities and is already 50 percent more productive than the two-year-old Speedmaster CD 102 UV it replaced.

"We wanted to expand our horizons, and that is exactly what we've done," says Jim Tepel, president. "We are one of just a few printers in southeast Michigan with the ability to print a wide range of specialty work—static cling, signage and floor decals, etc.—not to mention special effects like strike-through UV with reticulating varnish."

Automated Press Boosts Shop's Turnaround Times

APEX, NC—Millennium Print Group recently installed a five-color Komori Lithrone SX29 offset press with coater. The digital and offset business provides printed products for the academic, retail and pharmaceutical industries. Millennium chose the press because of its extensive automation, which allows the shop to offer faster turnaround times. The unit's in-line coater also means operators no longer have to apply varnish or coating in a separate pass, representing a savings in time.

SAN FRANCISCO—Let Us Copy recently acquired a Xerox 700 digital color press.

SARASOTA—Coastal Printing reports that it is the first Sarasota-Brandenton, FL, area printer to earn FSC chain-of-custody certification.

CHICAGO—Black Dot Group, a provider of creative development, design and editorial production, content development, page composition, photography, retouching and asset management, has moved from its Crystal Lake facility to the headquarters location of its parent, The CAPS Group, in Chicago.

NILES—On the heels of acquiring Michigan-based Batson Printing, Specialty Print Communications (SPC) has opened a third facility dedicated solely to lettershop services. The 73,000-square-foot plant, located one block away from the corporate headquarters, is now managed by Truman Pope, a 25-year industry veteran.

INDIANAPOLIS—Printing Partners has adopted G7 Master Printer standards to enrich its color services. The commercial printer applied La Crosse Litho Supply's ColorLink color assurance program to achieve compliance with the standard.

CARLSTADT—UNIMAC Graphics recently replaced its previous MIS system with EFI's Monarch Foundation, and implemented order processing, RFID inventory management and accounts receivable in six weeks. It also brought estimating and price list estimating online, and is in the process of installing 13 EFI Auto-Count machines to provide for shop floor data collection.
