Webcrafters Attains Top Designation in Green Masters Program

December 18, 2012
MADISON, WI—Dec. 18, 2012—Webcrafters Inc. is one of a select group of companies to earn the designation of “Green Master,” the highest tier in the Green Masters Program established by the Wisconsin Sustainable Business Council. As a Green Master, the printer has performed actions in each of the nine sustainability areas tracked in the program and has scored in the top 20 percent of all participating companies.

“It’s inspiring to see an industry leader remain focused on the principles of sustainability,” says Tom Eggert, executive director of the WI Sustainable Business Council. “We are proud of Webcrafters Inc.’s accomplishments over the past two years and congratulate them on achieving recognition as a Green Master in 2012.”

In 2012, Webcrafters invested in a large-scale HVAC system controls upgrade throughout the company.  The new control system highlighted the need to decrease temperature variances in the North office, so the company expanded the system’s Direct Digital Control (DDC) unit to control and monitor an additional 19 variable air volume (VAV) boxes.  Shortly after completion of the project, it was able to solve the imbalances between the heating and cooling in the different areas of the facility.

Webcrafters is now able to remotely control those areas of the plant and run the roof top unit more efficiently with decreased maintenance staff time. It is saving thousands of dollars in electricity and natural gas while providing increased employee comfort.

This year, the company also implemented a bindery trim removal system.  In the bookbinding process, books are trimmed to their final size by taking a small amount of trim off every book.  This book trim is now pulled to a central location where it is baled for recycling.

The printer’s old trim removal system consumed a lot of unnecessary energy. Webcrafters worked with a Wisconsin vendor to design a new control system that senses when and how much suction is needed at each machine and then only runs the system to that level. The upgrade is fully operational now and is saving Webcrafters upwards of a million Kilowatts of electricity annually.

Applicants to the Green Masters Program are judged on a comprehensive range of sustainability issues, from energy to water use to educational outreach and governance. More than 125 Wisconsin businesses are participating in the program, in which the top 20 percent achieve the highest “Green Master” designation.  For more information, or a complete list of Green Masters Program participants, go to www.greenmastersprogram.com.
