Neenah Paper to be Featured on History Channel’s ‘Modern Marvels’ Program

December 2006
ALPHARETTA, GA—December 21, 2006—Neenah Paper, which pioneered the development of premium recycled papers nearly 20 years ago, will again help elevate the profile of its industry with a coveted appearance on the History Channel’s “Modern Marvels” program. Neenah’s innovative application of sustainable technology will be featured in a segment about recycling during the “Environmental Tech” episode on Wednesday, January 24, 2007. More than one million viewers tune in every week to watch new episodes of the hit show.

“At Neenah Paper, located along the Fox River in Wisconsin, they’re recycling a lot more than paper,” the narrator says, as the program follows the process of manufacturing recycled papers and converting the wastewater into beneficial uses. “Everything from water to sludge to steam power is part of a giant self-sustaining loop.”

Using a patented and award-winning method, 5,000 tons of sludge from all of the company’s paper brands is converted to steam, electricity and glass aggregate every year. The primary purpose of this recycling process is to reduce the load on landfills, which carries out a corporate environmental directive. Neenah then purchases the steam back to dry paper during manufacturing and also to heat its Neenah, Wis., mill. The company projects that using this “Green Steam” will reduce its natural gas consumption by 80 percent annually.

“Neenah Paper recognizes that our industry is one of the most resource-intensive in the world. The manufacturing of paper consumes more water per ton of product than any other manufacturing process,” says Meredith Christiansen, Product Manager for Neenah Paper. “Therefore, it’s important as a leading fine paper mill to promote the technological advancements that allow us to recycle the water used in making recycled papers, return 70 percent of the water to the Fox River cleaner than when it left and to decrease our dependence on fossil fuels.”

According to “Modern Marvels’” web site, the show celebrates “ingenuity, invention and imagination brought to life on a grand scale…[it] tells the fascinating stories of the doers, dreamers and sometime-schemers who created everyday items, technological breakthroughs and man-made wonders.”

Tune into “Modern Marvels” on January 24 to show your support of the industry! For specific air times, please check your local television listings.
