PHILADELPHIA—December 13, 2013—In the "Inkjet: Adapting to New Markets—Is Your Business Ready?" Webinar presented this week by Printing Impressions and In-plant Graphics, and sponsored by Kodak, Barbara Pellow, group director of InfoTrends, presented the results from InfoTrends' digital printing application forecast. Panelists Brad Koch, vice president of sales at Webcrafters Inc., Madison, WI; and John Gaspari, vice president of operations for Specialty Print Communications (SPC) in Niles, IL, also discussed how transferring offset work to digital print production and emerging applications are driving their business results.
Pellow noted that inkjet production printing provides all of the existing advantages of digital printing, plus higher speeds and higher productivity throughput. She also said that inkjet printing is suitable for large volumes and is very competitive with offset. "High-speed inkjet brings a whole new level of flexibility to create automated processes and produce timely, accurate, personalized documents that are very indicative to the market needs we are seeing today. Inkjet technology has closed the productivity gap that existed for a long time between offset and toner-based products," Pellow said.
Koch explained how inkjet technology is making a difference on the book production end at Webcrafters. "There are quality differences between conventional web offset, toner and high-speed inkjet. But, with the advances in inkjet over the past few years, they are subtle differences. The bottom line is that inkjet quality is so close to offset that publishers have blessed it!"
Gaspari discussed how Specialty Print Communications is using inkjet technology for variable data direct mail applications. "Inkjet is simple for our clients to understand because it is a natural extension to what they have been doing in direct mail for years. But, instead of varying offers in black- and spot-color imaging, they can leverage the power of four-color process using the same exact data file and manufacturing processes."
