Ingram Expands Its Color POD Capabilities with Inkjet Printing at Lightning Source

NASHVILLE, TN—August 9, 2012—Ingram Content Group announced significant advances in its color print-on-demand capabilities, allowing for a much greater range of color books to be quickly printed and distributed around the world.

“High-speed color inkjet printing is poised to be a real opportunity for publishers looking for more efficiency in book manufacturing and the print supply chain overall,” said Phil Ollila, chief content officer, Ingram Content Group. “Through our new inkjet color option, publishers can use print-on-demand for a whole new range of titles.”

Made possible by recent developments in inkjet technology, Ingram’s print-on-demand unit Lightning Source launched its new standard inkjet color book option for publishers this week. The company currently is employing an Océ ColorStream 3500 web-fed inkjet press and expects to expand its capabilities by installing Océ ColorStream 3700 presses.

Lightning Source will begin manufacturing color books using inkjet technology immediately for publishers worldwide at its Tennessee location, and has plans to expand inkjet capability to its Pennsylvania location by the end of 2012. International expansion is expected to follow in early 2013. In addition, this new color option will complement Lightning’s existing premium color offering.

The combination of an economical high-speed solution with Lightning Source quality broadens the scope of print-on-demand to more titles. The new offering will be competitively priced and savings will be passed from Ingram to the publisher.

“Print on demand is an integral part of O’Reilly’s publishing strategy, and we have been pleased to work with Ingram to beta test its new color inkjet offering. I’ve seen the first editions off the press, and the quality is excellent,” said Laura Baldwin, President, O’Reilly Media. “In a changing market, Ingram’s new color POD gives us another option to bring more color books to more readers worldwide while simultaneously lowering our costs.”
