GPO Reports Continuing Digital Improvements, Positive Financial Results in FY 2013
WASHINGTON, DC—May 7, 2014—Public Printer Davita Vance-Cooks releases the U.S. Government Printing Office’s (GPO) Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2013. The report details digital improvements to GPO’s products and services and positive net income from the agency’s businesslike operations.
In carrying out its mission of Keeping America Informed during 2013, GPO recorded a number of achievements including:
- Issuing new apps for the U.S. Budget, the Plum Book, and the 113th Congress Mobile Member Guide
- Expanding access to House of Representative bill summaries via bulk download in XML format
- Making nearly one million titles available with more than 38 million documents downloaded each month from GPO’s Federal Digital System (FDsys)
- Completing the production of materials for the 2013 Presidential Inauguration
- Reaching the milestone of 100,000 customer orders through the GPOExpress program
- Installing a continuity-of-operations capability for secure credentials on time and under budget at GPO’s facility in Mississippi
- Launching an upgraded version of GPO’s Online Bookstore
- Recognition of GPO’s digital transformation in an independent report issued by the National Academy of Public Administration
GPO’s operations recorded positive net income of $7.3 million for the year, net of revenues for passport-related capital investments and a decrease in long-term workers’ compensation liability. In addition to an increase in operating revenue, FY 2013 was the first full year in which the reduction in costs due to GPO’s 2011-12 buyout was fully realized. Additionally, management strengthened GPO’s cost control program in anticipation of the impact of sequestration on printing and information product work.
“In FY 2013, GPO was confronted with unusual fiscal challenges as a result of sequestration and preparations for a Government shutdown,” said Public Printer Davita Vance-Cooks, who was nominated by President Obama and confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the 27th Public Printer of the United States in 2013, the first woman and the first African-American to ever hold that post. “In response, we made a concerted effort to control spending while continuing to meet the information needs of Congress, Federal agencies, and the public. I am particularly pleased that during the year, our employees designated GPO as one of the best places to work in the Federal Government, based on the results of the Office of Personnel Management’s Employee Viewpoint Survey.”
