Every Day Is a Creative Adventure with Cougar Paper—2014 Gold Ink Entry
Domtar's 100-lb. Cougar Cover, Smooth Finish, was used for the cover of Cougar LIVE. The designer used holographic magenta foil and Pillars of Light Holographic Clear Foil.
The inside front cover of Cougar LIVE features an inspirational quote from Oscar Wilde in purple lettering in holographic magenta foil - "To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all."
The inside cover also folds out revealing a crowd of people in vibrant colors.
For the water and mountains featured here, raised spot silk screen UV was used.
In this "Happy" image of a girl swimming on a sunny day raised spot silk screen UV was used for the water.

This eye-catching Gold Ink Awards entry from Domtar, titled “LIVE on Cougar,” and entered into the Brochures, Sheetfed, category, immediately commands attention right from the brightly-printed envelope. But the true magic unfolds when the envelope is opened and the lavishly printed and fluorescent spot-colored brochure is revealed. The multi-component promotional piece (third in a four-part series of Cougar paper promotions) inspires recipients to “Live for the moment. Live brightly,” and features words of wisdom from some of the world’s most inspiring people—pairing those quotes with various printing and finishing techniques. The project in its entirety consists of an envelope, letter, brochure and a pull-out card.
The run length of this unique paper promotion was 16,000 copies. Paper grades showcased included Domtar’s 80-lb. Cougar Text, Smooth Finish; 100-lb. Cougar Text, Smooth Finish; and 100-lb. Cougar Cover, Smooth Finish.
Various binding and finishing techniques were used to create a tactile effect. For the fold-out cover, the designer chose holographic magenta foil and Pillars of Light Holographic Clear Foil. For the water and mountains featured in the brochure, raised spot silk screen UV was used. The publication also featured several valley folds (for origami), and diecut lift up circles (on the page with secret No. 10).
Cougar LIVE was printed by Graphic Visual Solutions in Greensboro, NC, on an eight-color, 40″ Komori LS sheetfed offset press, using all conventional inks. “This project required the massive use of color (some forms had 16 colors), touch plates to enhance traditional four-color images, and tri-tone black-and-white images using metallic inks,” said Bryan Hall, president and CEO of Graphic Visual Solutions. “The ink manufacturer told us that the project was the largest use of fluorescent inks that they have seen in recent years. Weeks of testing also had to be done to pull off several of the design elements.”
