Shop Expands Into Half-Size Format Market

WICHITA, KS—Docuplex Graphics has installed a Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 75 press at its facility located here. The new press has enabled the 30-employee company to perform a variety of the larger-sized format work that it had previously outsourced—adding faster turnarounds and a measure of quality control to its capabilities.

"In addition to the ability to accept larger-format jobs, we've also gained speed, productivity and flexibility with respect to the paper stocks we can run," says company president Jay Ewy. He adds that Docuplex's pressroom upgrade dovetails nicely with its June acquisition of Wichita-based PrintMaster, which also brought some half-size equipment to the combined company.

New Miniature Folder Delivers Big ROI

GURNEE, IL—Haapanen Brothers, a complete graphics and commercial printing resource, recently purchased a Vijuk–G&K V-14 commercial/miniature folder. According to Haapanen Brothers owner Jerry Haapanen, his firm now has the capability of folding small inserts for its pharmaceutical customers much faster than it could before.

"Providing services that match our customers' expectations is a top priority, and this insert folder does just that. In two weeks time, we've folded more than a half-million pieces. The Vijuk–G&K V-14 meets our own company objectives of competitive pricing, quality workmanship and timely deliveries," he says.

Digital Press Boosts Printer's Capacity

BALTIMORE—J.W. Boarman Co., a full-service printer located in the Baltimore Empowerment Zone, has purchased a Konica Minolta bizhub PRESS C8000 color digital press from The Phillips Group, a Konica Minolta dealer.

"As our business evolved, it became necessary to look into a digital color press to complement our two- and four-color offset printing," explains J.W. Boarman owner Edmund Eck. "The color quality of the C8000 is impressive, and the speed (80 ppm) enables us to deliver a finished product to our clients in a fraction of the time that it took before."

The printer can now proof, print and ship a job in just one day. The C8000 is powered by a CREO color server, which acts as the print controller integrating into the company's Prinergy digital workflow. J.W. Boarman is reportedly the first Baltimore printer to have this type of configuration.
