BOSTON—After 113 years, the presses fell silent this week at Boston’s municipal printing department, reported The Boston Globe. The closure is said to have eliminated the jobs of 16 printers, binders and compositors, the victims of a budget crunch.
The move will bring an estimate $800,000 in savings this next fiscal year, the paper noted, as the city's 2009 budget included $2.65 million in printing plant costs and the budget just passed allots $1.4 million to pay for outside printing services (including the cost of retaining three employees to manage the outsourced work).
