Birmingham Offers Much for IPEX 2002

BIRMINGHAM, UK—With PRINT 01 soon to be a memory, thoughts will be turning to Birmingham, Great Britain, for IPEX 2002 next April. Dubbed "The Global Technology Event for Print, Publishing and Media," IPEX 2002 will take place April 9-17 at the National Exhibition Center (NEC).
With millions of British pounds invested in a revitalization program, Birmingham is fast becoming a hub for business, as well as recreational activities. In fact, the city is submitting a bid to become the European Capital of Culture for 2008.
At the last IPEX in 1998, exhibitors and visitors enjoyed the new surroundings of The Water's Edge at Brindley Place, a lively waterfront complex featuring taverns and restaurants, including Raymond Blanc's Le Petit Blanc and the Bank Restaurant & Bar.
Since then, Birmingham has been the focus of many new developments, including Mailbox, the city's new retail leisure complex. Mailbox offers a selection of designer shops, coupled with a wide and diverse variety of restaurants overlooking the newly restored canal basin.
Other new leisure developments include the Discovery Center, Birmingham's new museum of science and technology; Star City, an entertainment complex housing a 30-screen cinema; and Regency Wharf II, incorporating two acclaimed restaurants based in London: Livebait and Chez Gerard.
Finding a hotel should not be as daunting a task as it seems, even with an event this size. There are in excess of 60,000 beds in Birmingham and the surrounding area. The NEC also has a number of hotels within walking distance from the exhibition halls.
