Alaska Printer Gets in Trouble Again

January 2008
ANCHORAGE, AK—Nezar “Mike” Maad, the man who claimed his printing shop here was vandalized shortly after 9/11 but ended up getting arrested himself on federal charges of falsifying financial documents and lying to the government, is in trouble with the feds again.

Maad is facing federal charges in a reported scheme to defraud the state of Alaska over printing contracts, the Anchorage Daily News reported. Maad and Imad Salim Hereimi were indicted by a grand jury on 22 counts of mail fraud.

Prosecutors said Hereimi opened a printing company called Horizon Graphics, which had no equipment. Maad, while employed with the state’s Department of Health and Human Services, brokered state jobs to other printers and paid for them with cash or by using Horizon Graphics credit cards.

The paper quoted prosecutors as saying Maad created inflated invoices, many of them double the actual amount, submitted by Horizon to the state. Each fraud count represents the mailing of a state check to Horizon Graphics for subcontracted work done elsewhere much cheaper.

I have been printing for 20 years and I dont own any equipment, I broker 100% of my jobs and jack up the price to make a profit while selling the job for less than my customer would have paid at the same shop. Is that a crime?, I think not!
