GARDENA—L.A. Press is up-and-running with a new six-color, 40˝ Mitsubishi Model 3F-13 sheetfed press.

IRVINE—Orange County Printing has installed a six-color, 40˝ Komori Lithrone press outfitted with a Tri-Service ColorCommand temperature control/cooling system.

VAN NUYS—The installation of the Sentinel ink management system from Accel Graphic Systems is complete at Great Western Litho. The ink management system is now equipped on a Komori Lithrone 640 press purchased at PRINT 01.


MERIDEN—Three former shareholders of Vision Graphics have joined commercial printer Miller-Johnson Inc. They are Tom Mitchell, Andrew Mitchell and Erik Mitchell. The transaction was initiated on Miller-Johnson's behalf by Rampart Associates LLC.


HOLLYWOOD—Edward H. Owen, 79, died on March 11. With over 50 years experience in the newspaper industry, he was a former editor of various newspaper production magazines and was an international correspondent for several different industry trade journals. Owen was a life member of the Cleveland Club of Printing House Craftsmen. He was an Alumnus of the Year award winner from the Rochester Institute of Technology and a member of the board of directors of the Association of Graphic Art Consultants. He also received two Golden Keys awards from the Printing Industries of America.


CAROL STREAM—Berlin Industries has installed the world's first MasterFlo Four Out Deserter on a Heidelberg M-2000 web press. This Deserter receives a single shingled stream of four identical half-fold copies, each nested inside the other, running at up to 60,000 copies per hour from a PressTech folder. This results in four separate single shingle streams ready for trimming/stacking.

NILES—The Argus Press has added a new 5,700-square-foot facility dedicated to bindery and fulfillment production. Adjacent to its main facility, this additional plant will expand Argus' current fulfillment, pick-and-pack, stitching, folding and other finishing operations.

Universal Press, also of Niles, has installed a six-color, 40˝ Komori Lithrone press. It is outfitted with a TriService ColorCommand temperature control/cooling system and custom accessory shelving work surface on the press' gear side.


NEWPORT—Multi-Craft Litho has made a move from film to computer-to-plate, retiring its Screen DT-R3100 eight-page imagesetter in favor of a Screen PlateRite 8000 thermal CTP eight-page platesetter. The family owned company has been in business since 1955.


CHICOPEE—The Pond-Ekberg Co., a commercial printer and finisher, has installed a new six-color, 41˝ KBA Rapida 105 sheetfed press with in-line aqueous coating. The press was installed in January and is equipped with semi-automatic plate changers, CIP3/4 digital interface, automatic blanket and roller washers, and the KBA closed-loop spectrophotometry system. Jonathan Kratovil, company president, says Pond-Ekberg decided to go ahead with the purchase despite the economic slowdown in 2001, and expects the purchase will give the company an advantage over its competition when the economy makes a turnaround.
