Signing Highlights Graphic Communications Day

NEW YORK CITY—One highlight of Graphic Communications Day (GCD), held recently at Madison Square Garden, was a signing ceremony between the Association of Graphic Communications (AGC) and Fairleigh Dickinson University launching an Executive MBA in Graphic Communications degree program.


PHOENIX—O'Neil Printing, a 96-year-old company, is now running an eight-color Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 102 long perfector with aqueous coater. The 40˝ Speedmaster perfector—reportedly the only press of its kind in the Phoenix market—allows for four-over-four color printing in a single pass.


CHATSWORTH—S2K Graphics has celebrated its 15th anniversary. Formerly known as Signs 2000, S2K Graphics is a point-of-purchase graphics firm specializing in merchandising and promotional materials.

IRVINE—The Graphics Industry Council for City of Hope recently held its fourth annual "Shoot for the Cure" golf tournament, which raised more than $59,000 for research, treatment and education programs at City of Hope Cancer Center.

OXNARD—Custom Printing has taken steps to enhance its recycling program through the purchase of an industrial compactor to reduce the space needed to hold its weekly load of corrugated cardboard. The program is expected to quadruple the company's monthly recycling total.


DENVER—OVS Printing recently installed an eight-color Heidelberg Speedmaster SM 74 perfector with coater. The new press is being used to produce brochures and catalogs. Founded in 1919, OVS Printing services local trade customers.


HARTFORD—Joseph Merritt & Co. now offers short-run color printing thanks to the installation of a Xerox iGen3 digital production press.


LARGO—Direct Mail Solutions, a division of BBF Printing Solutions, announced the purchase of an eight-color Sanden Quantum 1500XP web offset press. The purchase marks the single largest investment that BBF has made during its 44 years in business.


STONE MOUNTAIN—Wallace Graphics has added mailing to complement its existing services. The new automated mail center is located next door to Wallace. The new company, Atlanta Mailing & Fulfillment, will offer automated mailing, list management and one-to-one marketing. The company is also planning to install a four-color, 40˝ Heidelberg press in early 2005.


BROADVIEW—Olympic Bindery has purchased a new Perfecta 132 TVC paper cutter from Fuller Grafix.

HILLSIDE—Suburban Chicago printer Darwill reports the addition of a third MAN Roland 700 press to its sheetfed pressroom. The 41˝ machine is a six-color model, complete with in-line coating and UV capabilities.


SOUTH BEND—Rink Printing has added digital printing capabilities with the installation of a Xerox DocuColor 6060 digital press, purchased from Enovation Graphic Systems.


CEDAR RAPIDS—Direct mail and lettershop specialist The Fisher Group has installed a Bravo-T saddlestitching system from Muller Martini. The Fisher Group is a full-service direct mail printer and lettershop specializing in long-run envelope packages and self-mailers.


Ann Arbor—ImageMaster has signed an agreement to implement CRC Information Systems' THE System business management software. ImageMaster will implement a fully integrated solution, including the commercial estimating, automatic data collection and executive notification modules.

LAKE LEELANAU—Enterprise Printing reports it has purchased a four-color Heidelberg GTO press to help grow its short-run process color business and complement its one- and two-color product line.

DENVILLE—HLV Graphics has installed a new four-color Heidelberg Quickmaster 46DI direct imaging press at its new facility here. The company is also celebrating its 20th year in the industry.

PENNSAUKEN—C&B Graphics, a six-year-old general commercial printer, has purchased a new Mitsubishi Diamond 3000R convertible sheetfed perfector with double coaters. The eight-color, 40˝ press, known as the Double Diamond, is equipped with in-line coaters before and after the perfecting unit. This configuration enables the press to print and coat both sides of the sheet in a single pass.

RIDGEFIELD—Holographic Finishers is now running a new Iijima MJ 104 ES convertible foil stamping and embossing press, the first model of its kind sold in the United States.

Binghamton—Sullivan Lithography recently installed a Brandtjen & Kluge UniFold automatic folder/gluer for converting pocket folders and CD wallets. The configuration selected by the pocket folder manufacturer included the vacuum feeder with new segmented converting table for increased versatility, while reducing job setup time; a four-head hot melt glue system; and the Kluge TransTable III.

Charlotte—Binding Solutions, a trade bindery, has upgraded its facilities with the purchase of a new Standard Horizon SpeedVac 100 tower collating system and a Standard Horizon BQ-260 perfect binder.


COLUMBUS—Hopkins Printing has added a fifth Heidelberg press to its pressroom—a four-color model with aqueous coater.

DAYTON—The Relizon Co. has been awarded a three-year contract with two one-year options for document management by Novation, the supply company of VHA Inc. and the University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC). The contract, worth nearly $100 million per year, is part of a master agreement involving 14 different suppliers of related products and services, from records archiving to healthcare document management.


DALLAS—Offset Paperback Manufacturers (OPM) has added a Muller Martini AmigoPlus perfect binding system to its finishing operations. OPM produces approximately 350 million mass-market and digest books per year. The company reportedly is the only paperback book manufacturer to exclusively use the offset printing process for text reproduction.

QUAKERTOWN—At Graph Expo, Fox Printing purchased a three-head Domino ON Demand system, two of which are solvent and the other UV, together with solvent and UV dryers. The print solution will be utilized in an in-line variable data application, printing folded mailers and CD envelopes on both a mailtable and folder.

WILKES BARRE—Bedwick & Jones Printing recently added a continuous-feed Stahlfolder B-20 to its bindery. The shop upgraded from a pile feeder. The new equipment is being used to finish annual reports, postcards and saddlestitched books.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND—The McClatchy Co., publisher of The Island Packet and The Beaufort Gazette, has purchased a 4x1 KBA Prisma newspaper web press for its new 40,000-square-foot production facility. The project includes four printing towers for 1x4:4 and one tower for 1x4:4 or 2x2:2. The press will include six KBA Pastostar RC split-arm reel stands with infeed systems, one KBA KF five-jaw folder, one KBA KF three-jaw folder and one quarter folder.


Austin—Whitley Co. recently added a six-color Heidelberg Speedmaster CD 102. The shop is using the new equipment to produce annual reports, college recruitment materials, ad brochures and magazines. Since the installation of the press, Whitley reports it has increased its output to 2,000 more sheets per hour. Whitley Co. is a family owned and operated general commercial print shop that services high-quality advertising agencies and critical buyers. The shop has been in business for 54 years and has been running Heidelberg equipment since 1968.  

DALLAS—The Graphics Group, a Consolidated Graphics company, has installed a host of Heidelberg bindery equipment, including a Polar cutter, Transomat, Stacklift with platform and a jogger. The Graphics Group is a mid-size printer that services local ad agencies, graphic designers and corporations.


RICHMOND—Atwood's Kwik Kopy Printing was honored at the Crouser Professional Performance Alliance meeting for demonstrating "Exceptional Performance in Print Shop Management."


Fond du Lac—Action Printing has purchased a new DGM 440S press line from Dauphin Graphic Machines. The configuration of the line will be unique in that it consists of 12 DGM 440S shaftless units as three four-high towers, and two DGM 1035 folders. The setup includes remote ink control, CIP3 ink presetting capabilities and cutoff controls. In addition, it will house four splicers, web guides, automatic registration control and automated stackers at each delivery.

Racine—Econoprint has installed a new two-color Heidelberg Printmaster QM 46. The company is using the new press to produce letterhead, envelopes and brochures. Econoprint is a general commercial print shop that has been in business for 32 years. The shop houses 21 employees and services clients in the manufacturing and financial industries.

SUN PRAIRIE—Royle Printing has expanded its operation with the addition of an eight-unit, two-web Harris (now Goss) M-1000B press, a 12-pocket Muller Martini Prima Plus-SB saddlestitcher for selective binding and two Domino ink-jet stations. The company anticipates a 10 to 15 percent increase in staffing.
