A Buried Treasure Lies in This Gold Ink Entry
This Gold Ink Awards entry from Admore Inc., titled "Treasures Untold" and entered into the Folders category, screams of the adventure to be had (and the treasure to be found) on the open seas. Each year, Admore, an Ennis Co. based in Macomb, MI, designs a different Halloween-themed folder promotion that is sent to its distributor based-customers and prospects that includes graphic designers, ad specialty dealers, and print brokers. Now in its 11th edition, this pirate-themed piece features an envelope and folder, with a surprise component that can be removed.
The Captain Hook folder was custom diecut on 80# Mohawk New Black Felt cover. It was printed in four-color process and PMS 123U over a white opaque ink with multiple foil colors (black, platinum, apple red, white, European gold). Captain Hook was created on the folder using fully detailed sculptured embossing and raised round type. A clever eye patch over the pirate's eye (that must be taken off to open the folder) is a custom diecut closure band on 80# Mohawk New Black Felt cover. It was printed in white opaque ink with one-level raised blind emboss. According to Lisa Goebel, marketing manager for Admore, the printer hand assembled 10,000 eye patches.
The treasure map within the folder is printed in four-color process on 65# Neenah Astroparche White cover and black and was stitched into the folder. Within one of the pockets in the folder is a treasure chest. The treasure chest is a custom diecut mini folder on 12-pt. C2S semi-gloss cover. It was printed in a four-color process with soft-touch coating on the outside and gloss aqueous coating on the inside. Open the chest and you will find silver and gold diecut coins (stamped in silver or European gold foil on 20-pt.), that when turned over, offer special promotions.
"The piece needed to be memorable so when customers think folders, they think Admore," said Goebel. "In addition to this printed promotion, if a customer talked like a pirate to our reps, we sent them some treasure—an insulated coffee mug filled with gold and silver doubloons, chocolate coins embossed with our folder logo and the promotion name on them. They could also enter a contest to win a wooden treasure chest filled with pirate's booty just like the one in the pocket of the folder. We filled it with all kinds of pirate candy, DVD’s of pirate movies and a GPS tracking system to help them find future treasure, etc."
The run length of this clever promotion was 10,000, and the presses used to produce this piece were a 40" Heidelberg Speedmaster CD 102 (for the pirate folder, treasure map, treasure chest); a 29" manroland 505 (eye patch, coupon coins); a Bobst 102 with Eagle Hot Foil System (pirate folder); a 28" Thompson FUB (coupon coins, eye patch); and a Bobst 104 (diecut all).
